Строительство моста было завершено в 1883 году и 24 мая он был торжественно открыт, причем первой прошла по нему Эмили Роблинг. Грандиозное сооружение получило название "Мост Нью-Йорка и Бруклина" и лишь позднее было переименовано в привычное сегодня "Бруклинский мост».

Однако неделю спустя в народе прошёл слух о возможности внезапного обрушения моста, что стало причиной давки и гибели двенадцати человек. Чтобы уверить народ в прочности моста, власти провели по нему 21 слона из гастролировавшего неподалёку цирка.

Изначально на новом мосту были предусмотрены два железнодорожных пути, четыре полосы для конных экипажей, которые вскоре стали автомобильными и приподнятая над основным полотном моста пешеходная дорожка. В пятидесятых годах XX века была проведена реконструкция, движение рельсового транспорта было прекращено, зато количество автомобильных полос увеличилось до шести. Сейчас движение по Бруклинскому мосту разрешено для легковых автомобилей, пешеходов и велосипедистов.
