Десять лет назад, 26 декабря 2004 года, шесть тысяч человек погибли на курортах южного Таиланда в результате разрушительного цунами. Цунами затронуло почти всё западное побережье Пхукета, где расположены самые популярные пляжи - Патонг, Карон, Камала и Ката. Была частично уничтожена инфраструктура - отели, рестораны, бары, клубы. Более половины погибших составили иностранные туристы, среди них были и россияне. Туристический рай на юге Таиланда в течение одного часа превратился в ад. Причина цунами - в подводном землетрясении в Индийском океане. До сих пор оно считается одним из самых серьезных стихийных бедствий в современной истории и третьим по силе за всю историю наблюдения. Его мощность составила 9,1 баллов по шкале Рихтера.
