В первой половине XVII в. удельный вес колониальной торговли Ост-Индской компании составлял не более 25% от общего голландского товарооборота. Преобладала посредническая торговля с Севером и Востоком Европы. Голландцы торговали массовыми товарами - зерном, мясом, вином, солью, хмелем, солёной рыбой, оружием и др. Балтийское направление стало основным с европейской торговле Голландии. В 1666 г. оно поглощало 75% всех капиталов голландской биржи.
