Вторые зимние олимпийские игры проходили с 11 по 19 февраля 1928 в Санкт-Морице, что в Швейцарии. В течение недели 464 спортсмена из 25 стран мира состязались в различных дисциплинах. Всего было представлено 8 основных видов спорта и 2 показательных.
На место столицы вторых зимних олимпийских игр претендовали Санкт-Мориц, Давос и Энгельберг. А мае 1926 года члены Международного олимпийского комитета на очередном заседании выбрали Санкт-Мориц. Из государственной казны на II Зимние олимпийские игры было выделено 100 000 швейцарских франков. Причем только 40 процентов от этой суммы пошло на организацию игр. 60% потратили на сборную команду Швейцарии (причем как для зимних, так и для летних ОИ). Немалую часть расходов на организацию спортивных состязаний взяли на себя кантон Граубюнден и муниципалитет Санкт-Морица.
За событиями, разворачивающимися на стадионах, наблюдали 330 журналистов из 27 стран мира. Из Германии приехал 81 репортер, 30 человек из Франции, 21 из Италии. А вот Аргентина и Мексика в играх участвовали, а журналистов не прислали. Греция, Дания и Турция не выставляли спортсменов на соревнования, но журналисты этих стран аккредитацию на олимпиаде получили.
Из всех спортсменов было всего 26 женщин. Впервые приехали спортсмены из Аргентины (10 человек), Германии (43 человека), Литвы (1 человек), Люксембурга (5 человек), Мексики (5 человек), Нидерландов (7 человек), Румынии (10 человек), Эстонии (2 человека), Японии (6 человек). Больше всего участников было в командах Австрии (39 человек), Великобритании (32 человека), Франции (38 человек), Швейцарии (41 человек), Швеции (44 человека).
На 2 зимних олимпийских играх были представлены такие вида спорта, как бобслей, лыжное двоеборье, прыжки с трамплина, фигурное катание, конькобежный спорт, лыжные гонки, скелетон, хоккей с шайбой. В качестве демонстрационных видов – гонки на собаках и соревнования военных патрулей. В программе не оказалось керлинга, зато одним из основных видов стал скелетон.
