Portolan chart (or portolan) is a maritime map of the Renaissance, from the end of the 13TH CENTURY until the 16th century, showing the area of the Mediterranean and black seas, as well as the coast of the Atlantic Ocean for Gibraltar: to the North from the Iberian Peninsula to Flanders, including the southern coast of Ireland and Britain, to the South is a Moroccan beach. The outlines of the seas, the portulanah, are close enough to the contours of these same seas on contemporary maps, which cannot be said about other cards known to Europeans in the world — the so-called Mappa mundi, built in the same era.
