Одной из основ геополитической экономии является теория существования длинных волн (больших циклов) экономического развития, предложенная русским экономистом Н.Д. Кондратьевым. Политико-экономические отношения разных регионов между собой зачастую описывают в рамках понятий «ядро-полупериферия-периферия». Различия между этими понятиями лежат в соотношении понятий «властвование-подчиненность». Часто можно встретить определения «ядра» как обособленной территории, эксплуатирующей «периферию», а «полупериферии» - как территории, способной эксплуатировать «периферию», но одновременно эксплуатируемой «ядром».
