Дмитрий Кокарев родился 11 февраля 1991 года в Нижнем Новгороде. Ребенок родился недоношенным, поэтому после появления на свет у него возникли осложнения со здоровьем. Когда Диме исполнился год, врачи поставили ему диагноз – детский церебральный паралич. У него плохо двигалась рука, ноги до сих пор практически не двигаются. В оздоровительных целях родители впервые привели Дмитрия в бассейн, когда ему было всего три месяца.
Уже в пять лет Дмитрий пришел в бассейн Дома спорта "Сормович" в Нижнем Новгороде. Там он попал в группу к Вадиму Юрьевичу Морозову, который и по сей день является его тренером.
Учился в школе №83 гор. Нижнего Новгорода с пятого класса.
В 1998 году Дмитрий Кокарев принял участие в первых соревнованиях. А сегодня на его счету восемь олимпийских медалей по плаванию. Дмитрий 11-кратный чемпион мира, многократный чемпион России. Залуженный мастер спорта.
Среднее специальное образование (бухгалтер) получил в Нижегородском филиале московского института экономики, статистики и информатики.

Награды

- Орден Почёта (30 сентября 2009 года) — за большой вклад в развитие физической культуры и спорта, высокие спортивные достижения на XIII Паралимпийских играх 2008 года в Пекине.
