На парламентских выборах 2010 года Кэмерон является кандидатом на пост премьер-министра от Консервативной партии.

На предвыборных дебатах весной 2010 года Кэмерон, по результатам опросов, проиграл в первом туре дебатов Нику Клеггу, но победил в последнем.

Вечером 11 мая 2010 года премьер-министр Гордон Браун объявил о своём уходе с постов главы правительства и лидера Лейбористской партии и подал Королеве прошение об отставке с поста премьер-министра.

В тот же вечер предложение Королевы о формировании правительства получил Дэвид Камерон, партия которого набрала наибольшее число мандатов на всеобщих выборах 6 мая 2010 года (но не получила абсолютного большинства в парламенте).
