Заголовок является важным компонентом газетной статьи и, выступая в качестве средства воздействия, обращает внимание читателя на то, о чем пойдет речь в статье, то есть, на ее содержание. Однако заголовок не раскрывает само содержание, а лишь побуждает читателя к тому, чтобы прочесть статью. Для некоторых английских и американских газет характерной чертой является сенсационность заголовков, это такие газеты как The Sun, Morning Star, The National Enquirer. Но в данной курсовой работе подобные газеты рассматриваться не будут.
Часто у читателя, для которого английский язык не является родным, возникают трудности с пониманием заголовков. В первую очередь, это можно объяснить спецификой языка, нарушением языковых норм, особыми правилами пунктуации и обильным использованием клише и сокращений. Для заголовков существуют особые грамматические и стилистические правила, которые отличаются от правил обычного текста (Швец А. В, 2008: 43).
Первое, что бросается в глаза читателю, когда тот берет в руки газету, - это заголовок. Для того чтобы привлечь внимание читателя, заголовки выделяют крупным шрифтом или цветом, что делает их яркими, броскими и запоминающимися. Помимо этого, авторы газетных заголовков используют целый ряд лингвистических приемов, чтобы заставить читателя обратить на них внимание и прочитать их.
Заголовки обладают "визуальной функцией". Шрифт заголовка гораздо больше, чем текст самой газетной статьи, к которой они относятся, и часто бывает так, что заголовки первой полосы, особенно в таблоидных газетах, занимают места больше, чем сама статья. Заголовки функционируют в соединении с другими визуальными аспектами газеты, такими, как изображения, которые могут прибавить дополнительную глубину смыслу заголовка (Швейцер А.Д., 2009: 105).
Если информация представлена довольно-таки "просто", тогда в заголовок включают детали того, что произошло, кто в этом участвовал, где это произошло, при каких обстоятельствах. Это можно свести к понятиям что, кто, где, как. Большинство информативных моделей включают в себя также элементы когда и почему, но поскольку ежедневные газеты имеют тенденцию описывать события "на злобу дня", понятие "когда" может быть понято и без пояснений. А "почему" скорее можно встретить в самой газетной статье, а не в заголовке.
