История чемпионатов по хоккею началась в 1920 году. Организатор соревнований - Международная федерация хоккея (ИИХФ).

Первоначально турниры проводились только в рамках Олимпийских игр, однако впоследствии стали ежегодными.
Первый Олимпийский хоккейный турнир прошёл с 23 апреля по 29 апреля 1920 года в столице Бельгии Антверпене, в рамках седьмых летних олимпийских игр. В 1982 году турнир был признан первым чемпионатом мира по хоккею с шайбой,
