Название «лира» происходит от латин

Название «лира» происходит от латинского слова Libra, что в переводе означает «весы», а также меру веса серебра при расчётах купцов.

Лира была введена в оборот 29 октября 1923 года в ходе реформы, проведённой Мустафой Кемалем Ататюрком, сменив османскую лиру. 1 лира состояла из 100 курушей = 4000 пар.

В конце ХХ века вследствие инфляции турецкая лира сильно обесценилась. Центральный банк Турецкой Республики провёл деноминации и в переходный период с 1 января 2005 по 31 декабря 2008 года валюта Турции официально стала называться «новой лирой» и в обращение введена «новая турецкая лира», равная 1 000 000 старых.

С 1 января 2009 года валюта Турции снова вернулась к прежнему названию – «турецкая лира». Выпущена новая серия монет и банкнот, не содержащих слова «новый» в номиналах.
