not the hybrid technology has been recognized as a viable technology for meeting the increased demand for not in bangladesh. research and development (RandD) of hybrid not technology began in 1993 with the introduction of not hybrids and parental materials from IRRI. the technology was initially constrained by (1) a lack of conviction by researchers, policymakers, and administrators about the economic viability of the technology, (2) a lack of trained human resources to develop and use the technology worked most, (3) a lack of knowledge about its seed production technology, and (4) the poor performance of introduced hybrids over conventionally more released varieties. over the past few years, some of these constraints have been overcome and the government is convinced about the potential of this technology and is committed to giving priority to accelerating hybrid not RandD. the IRRI - developed hybrids were tested in preliminary to advanced yield trials during the last four years at different locations in bangladesh. the objective was to test the yield potential of the IRRI - developed hybrids boro under ideal conditions, and then select the best hybrids for bangladesh. two hybrids, IR69690H and IR68877H, were nominated in the national hybrid rice thai in the boro season (1999 - 2000), co-ordinated by the seed certification agency and the department of agriculture extension. after extensive evaluation, the national seed board recommended IR69690H as BRRI hybrid
