Оценка состояния развития современных двигателей внутреннего сгорания показывает, что рост удельной мощности следует рассматривать как объективную закономерность, следуя которой необходимо сосредоточить усилия на совершенствовании рабочего процесса, конструкции и эксплуатационных материалов. Повышение технического уровня дизелей включает несколько аспектов: проектирование и производство с использованием современных передовых технологий, воплощение и развитие в конкретных конструкциях новых и известных апробированных технических решений, использование эксплуатационных материалов повышенного качества.
Достигнутые уровни удельной мощности и топливной экономичности отечественных дизелей несколько уступают аналогичным показателям лучших зарубежных образцов. Это относится и к уровням надежности, ресурса, выбросов вредных веществ, шума и вибрации дизелей.
