Для скачивания видео с YouTube существует целый ряд сторонних сервисов, например SaveTube, а также расширений для браузеров, например VideoDownloader для FireFox. Начиная с января 2009 года YouTube представила своим пользователям возможность скачивания некоторых видеоматериалов прямиком с сайта, причем их сохранение возможно без помощи сторонних сервисов.

На сервис запрещено закачивать видеоматериалы, содержание которых запрещено законодательством США об авторском праве. Довольно часто сотрудника сервиса приходится «выковыривать» подобные материалы, сначала убирая звук, а потом и вовсе удаляя материал с сервера.

Но человеческие возможности ограничены, и за всем уследить попросту невозможно. В результате на сервис регулярно закачиваются материалы с нарушением авторских прав. Их удаление возможно только после жалобы правообладателя сотрудникам YouTube.

Так, летом 2006 года некто Роберт Тур подал против сервиса иск, в котором обвинял YouTube в нарушении авторских прав. 9 октября 2006 года сервис удовлетворил иск Японской ассоциации правообладателей – JASRAC, и удалил 29549 видеороликов.

12 октября того же 2006 года сервис подписал с CBS и Universal Media Group соглашение, согласно которому данные компании могут транслировать свое видео через сервис.

13 марта 2007 года компанией Viacom был выдвинут иск против Google. В иске содержалось обвинение против сервиса YouTube в регулярном нарушении авторских прав, и требование передать компании регистрационные данные всех пользователей сервиса.

Что интересно, Федеральный суд штата Нью-Йорк удовлетворил требование истца, хоть это и не соответствует законодательству США.
