Электрический аппарат- электромеханическое устройство, предназначенное для управления электрическими и неэлектрическими объектами, а также для защиты этих объектов при ненормальных режимах работы. Электрические аппараты подразделяют:
 по напряжению – низкого напряжения (до 1000 В), высокого напряжения (свыше 1000 В);
 по роду тока – постоянного тока, переменного тока промышленной частоты, переменного тока повышенной частоты;
 по роду защиты от окружающей среды – в исполнениях открытом, закрытом, брызгозащищенном, водозащищенном, термическом, взрывобезопасном и др.;
 по способу действия – электромагнитные, магнитоэлектрические, индукционные, тепловые и т.д.;
 по принципу работы – контактные и бесконтактные.
Контактные электрические аппараты имеют подвижные контактные части, и воздействие на управляемую цепь осуществляется путем замыкания или размыкания этих контактов. Контактные аппараты могут быть автоматическими и неавтоматическими. Автоматические контактные аппараты, приходящие в действие от заданного режима работы цепи или машины. Неавтоматические контактные аппараты – это аппараты, действие которых зависит только от оператора, управление происходит дистанционно или непосредственно. Бесконтактные электрические аппараты не имеют коммутирующих контактов; осуществляют управление путем изменения своих электрических параметров (индуктивность, емкость, сопротивление).
