в 1851 году был составлен проект первой в стране железной дороги. Предполагалось соединить два крупнейших центра: Хельсинки и Тавастгус. Но Крымская война не позволила осуществить дорогостоящий проект.
В 1857-м году к вопросу о железной дороге вернулись снова. Но познания финских инженеров на тот момент были весьма скромными, и потому нескольких специалистов отправили в Англию для изучения железнодорожного дела. По их возвращению была начата подготовительная работа. В марте 1862 года между Гельсингфорсом и Тавастугом был пущен первый паровоз.
