Город расположен на правом берегу реки Тура. В 252 км от Екатеринбурга. В свердловской области. Основан 30 января 1600 года как острог на месте разрушенного Ермаком древнего поселения Епанчин. Основание связано с открытием нового более короткого пути от Соликамска до верховья Туры и острог между Верхотурьем и Тюменью был необходим для охраны водного пути в Сибирь. Благодаря пашням, расположенным рядом с городом, в 1640-е годы Туринск стал крупным сибирским центром хлебной торговли.
