С историей Первого Московского Государственного Медицинского Университета имени Ивана Михайловича Сеченова теснейшим образом связана история медицинского образования, медицинской науки и здравоохранения России. Первый Московский Государственный Медицинский Университет является колыбелью большинства отечественных медицинских школ, научных медицинских обществ; в её стенах зарождались первые медицинские журналы, созданы лучшие учебники и руководства.

Родоначальником Первого Московский Государственный Медицинский Университет был медицинский факультет Императорского Московского университета, открытого в 1755 году по предложению великого русского ученого Михаил Васильевич Ломоносова и графа Ивана Ивановича Шувалова в период правления императрицы Елизаветы Петровны. Занятия на медицинском факультете начались в 1758 году.
