Настольным теннисом сегодня профессионально занимаются на всех обитаемых континентах — 218 стран (на 2013 год) входят в ITTF. Особой популярностью настольный теннис пользуется в Азии, где проживают около 4 миллиардов человек.

Начиная с 1970-х годов в женском настольном теннисе безоговорочно доминируют китайские спортсменки. Так, с 1975 года женская сборная Китая всего два раза проигрывала чемпионат мира в командном зачёте (в 1991 году объединённой сборной Кореи и в 2010 году сборной Сингапура)[5]. В современном мужском настольном теннисе доминирование китайских теннисистов также очень велико. Вообще, на последних 8 чемпионатах мира (1995—2009) из 40 разыгранных золотых медалей лишь 3 достались не китайцам — в мужском одиночном разряде в 1997 году победил швед Ян-Уве Вальднер, в 2003 году — австриец Вернер Шлагер, мужская команда Швеции выигрывала «золото» чемпионата мира в 2000 году.
