Главный герой – офицер по должности и разумный человек по натуре – понимает и тех, и других. Почему он, американец, оказывается в гуще европейской войны, кажется, не знает даже он сам. Живя в Италии, он решает, что лучше ему встать на сторону людей, к которым он привык, чем возвращаться на родину и заниматься ничего не значащими действиями в подготовительном военном лагере. На реальном фронте он имеет настоящее дело и чувствует себя более живым. Здесь у него – друзья, девочки, работа. Но всё меняется, когда в жизнь Генри входит Кэтрин. Как только у героя появляется то, ради чего стоит жить по-настоящему, он без зазрения совести покидает поле боя, чтобы заниматься единственным, что его интересует – есть, пить, спать с любимой женщиной.
