Петропавловская крепость была превращена в музей в середине 1920-х годов. Несмотря на музейный статус объекта, на территории Петропавловки долгие годы существовали два объекта государственной важности – Газодинамическая лаборатория и Монетный двор. До наших дней функционирует один из них – Санкт-Петербургский монетный двор.
