То, что свет влияет на электричество (фотоэффект), впервые обнаружил Генрих Герц (немецкий физик) в 1887 году. Он подробно расписал свои наблюдения, но так и не смог внятно объяснить это явление. Александр Столетов в феврале 1888 г смог найти некоторые закономерности фотоэффекта. Он же и разработал «электрический глаз» - прообраз фотоэлементов. В дальнейшем это явление пытались объяснить многие учёные, но только одному из них удалось полностью объяснить природу фотоэффекта. Им был А. Эйнштейн (1905 год).
