Технические приемы перевода подразделяются на приемы прямо¬го перевода (заимствование, калька, дословный перевод) и приемы косвенного перевода (транспозиция-замена части речи, модуляция-изменение точки зрения, эквиваленция-замена пословиц другим образом, предупредительных надписей и пр., адаптация-замена описываемой ситуации)

Основное содержание книги составляет детальное сопоставление английского и французского языков по всем этим трем планам

Главное различие между английским и французским языками состоит в том, что английские слова чаще отражают план реальности, являясь словами-образами (конкретные, мотивированные), а французские слова — план концептуальный, выступая в качестве слов-знаков (абстрактные, немотивированные)

Отсюда вытекают многочисленные частные различия: в объеме значения (вызывающие необходимость конкретизации или генерализации при переводе), в видовых значениях (как интеллектуальных — длительность, завершенность, так и аффективных — интенсивность, непринужденность)
