В весеннем цикле народных праздников особое место занимает Масленица. На Масленицу принято ходить в гости, печь блины, устраивать гулянья на лошадях. Праздник всегда был очень популярным в Украине, в нем обычно больше дозволений, чем запретов, что можно объяснить незначительным влиянием христианства на народный обряд.

Празднование Масленицы состоит из трех моментов: чествование Масленицы в понедельник, кульминационный момент, или «перелом», в четверг и Прощеное воскресенье. Итак, праздник развернулся в городе на целую неделю, но, конечно, наиболее красочным и многолюдным был он в последний день, в воскресенье.

Многие обряды не дожили до нашего времени, но мне хочется рассказать о некоторых из них. Так, например, замужние женщины всю неделю устраивали «колодку». В понедельник утром они собирались в корчме. Одна из женщин ставила на стол маленькое полено или палку — это колодка. Остальные брали колодку по очереди, окутывали ее тканью, а потом снова ставили на стол. Все это действо означало, что колодка родилась. Принято было поздравлять с рождением колодки: покупали горилку, садились за стол вокруг колодки и начинали поздравлять. После поздравлений женщины возвращались домой, а колодка оставалась до следующего дня. Поздравляли колодку до субботы: в понедельник колодка родилась, во вторник крестилась, в четверг умирает, в пятницу ее хоронят, а в субботу плачут. Таким образом женщины получали свободу, избавляясь на время от семейных забот.

А вот один обычай, связанный с колодкой, может быть возрожден и сейчас. Так, мы наблюдали во время празднования Масленицы в пашей школе, как девушки-старшеклассницы также привязывали колодку, но только юношам к левой руке. Девушки украшали колодку разноцветными лентами и бумажными цветами. Ребята должны были выплатить девушкам выкуп за колодку деньгами или подарками.
