Третье направление этого периода — волшебные сказки, которые представлены произведениями двух ведущих писателей этого времени, Л. Кэрролла (1832-1898) и Дж. Макдональда (1824-1905).
«Алиса в Стране Чудес» (1865) Л. Кэрролла является первой английской сказкой-сном («а скеат-эйэгу»), хотя, по мнению Дж.Р.Р. Толкина, такие сказки нельзя называть волшебными (т.е. те, которые используют механику Сна, сновидений человека, чтобы объяснить происхождение содержащихся в них чудес [см. Толкин, 1991]). В этой сказке, а также в «Алисе в Зазеркалье» (1872) Кэрролл переосмысляет принцип романтического двоемирия.
