По данным социологов 55% россиян одобряют вегетарианство, однако сами не хотят ему придерживаться. Убежденных вегетарианцев насчитывается лишь 4%, в то время как в мире это число составляет 10%. Женщины одобряют вегетарианскую систему питания чаще мужчин, а легче всего отказаться от мяса - молодежи в возрасте до 24 лет, 7% из них готовы начать вегетарианский образ жизни.

В чем же причина такого отношения к вегетарианству?
В России ассортимент вегетарианских товаров весьма ограничен. Из-за климатических условий в России нет круглогодичного доступа к разнообразной растительной пище, а импортные овощи и фрукты зачастую некачественные и лишь вредят нашему здоровью. Более того, вегетарианцев в России не так много, поэтому производители продуктов питания не делают на них серьезную ставку. Помимо вышеупомянутых причин количество ресторанов вегетарианской пищи крайне мало.
В дореволюционной России вегетарианство широко развивалось: в городах появлялись вегетарианские поседения, школы, детские сады и столовые. Особую роль в распространении идей вегетарианства сыграл Лев Николаевич Толстой. Однако после Октябрьской революции правительство стало препятствовать развитию вегетарианских заведения: оно увеличивало арендную плату, вводило повышенные требования к персоналу и т.д., а позже и вовсе закрыли их.
С тех пор эта тенденция сохраняется. За последние 5 лет число сторонников вегетарианства упало с 66% до 55%.
