Особое место в этот день отведено цветам. Англичане заимствовали у французов этот обычай дарения цветов в день святого Валентина в начале 18 века. Существует целая азбука цветов, с помощью которой можно выразить все свои чувства. Но все же, наибольшее предпочтение отдается красной розе, которая, согласно легенде, появилась благодаря богине любви и красоты Афродите - она наступила на куст белых роз, и, уколов ногу о шипы, окрасила эти цветы в алый цвет. Людовик XVI преподнес Марии-Антуанетте в этот день букет красных роз, и отсюда, как полагают многие, пошла эта традиция. Неизменной на всех открытках остается подпись: (c Любовью от Валентина).
