Сюжет повествует о недалеком (по нашим меркам) будущем. Стоит 2019 год, люди создали подобных себе роботов, которых называют — репликанты. Визуально отличить их от людей невозможно, они абсолютно идентичны. Люди используют их в своих целях, короче говоря они обслуживающий персонал. Жизненный цикл репликантов всего четыре года, потом они умирают. Одна группа этих робот решила совершить побег и выяснить почему у них такой маленький срок жизни. Людей, которые отслеживают и убивают репликантов, называют — «блэйд-раннеры» или по-русски «бегущие по лезвию». Использование этих роботов с некоторых пор запрещено, поэтому им можно находиться только на внеземных колониях, если же они совершают побег, то должны быть уничтожены.
