В июне 1936 года началось дальнейшее строительство узкоколейной линии протяжённостью 114 км от посёлка Норильск до порта Дудинка. Строить дорогу приходилось в очень сложных условиях, при этом сроки ещё поджимали. Это же Север, снег, плюс ветра, дорогу постоянно заносило. И вот один из заключенных, строивших дорогу, Михаил Потапов, изобрел защитные щиты от снега, они и сейчас в ходу. 17 мая 1937 года считается официальной датой завершения этого строительства. И уже на следующий день из Дудинки в Норильск вышел первый поезд, который прибыл на место назначения через три дня. Потом были проблемы с земляным полотном и другие трудности, но разве это уже могло остановить, всё исправили и наладили, конечно, скорость прохождения уменьшилась до суток, а при хороших погодных условиях аж за 10-12 часов долетали.
