Произведение повествует о жизни приютского мальчика в Англии. Не выдержав жестокого обращения в приюте,мальчик сбегает из приюта в поисках лучшей жизни.Мальчик попадает в компанию воров, сбегает и оттуда, не желая воровать, на пути ему встречается много добрых и благородных людей, которые желают его воспитывать.Но воры и грабители ведут за ним охоту- Оливер слишком много знает. Развязка у романа самая неожиданная, самым злым грабителем оказывается сводный брат Оливера.
