Уральский государственный горный университет - первое высшее учебное заведение Урала. Он был учрежден 3 июля в 1914 году Законом, утвержденным Императором Николаем II, как Екатеринбургский горный институт. Первым ректором института был назначен 36-летний профессор Петроградского горного института Петр Петрович фон Веймарн. В 1917 году Уральский горный открыл свои двери абитуриентам.в Совет института поступило 610 прошений от выпускников гимназий, училищ, кадетских корпусов, духовных семинарий и учительских институтов; зачислено же было 306 человек. 22 октября 1917 года в вузе начались первые занятия.С 1923 по 1930 годы институт входил в состав Уральского университета (до 1925 года) и Уральского политехнического института. В 1934 году, когда вуз был переименован в Свердловский горный институт, специалистов горного дела готовили 32 его кафедры.Стремительно повышая уровень образования, в 2004 году вуз успешно прошел процедуру комплексной оценки деятельности и решением Аккредитационной коллегии Министерства образования и науки РФ получил высший статус и теперь называется Уральский государственный горный университет.
