Мурманская область относится к основным горнорудным районам России. На ее территории сконцентрированы крупнейшие предприятия горнодобывающей промышленности, цветной металлургии, деятельность которых в течение нескольких десятилетий привела к значительному ухудшению состояния экосистем северной части Кольского полуострова.

Главными стационарными источниками загрязнения атмосферы являются предприятия цветной металлургии, а также энергетики, военного комплекса, химической промышленности и стройиндустрии. В зоне выбросов комбината "Печенганикель" уничтожены лесные массивы, загрязнены тяжелыми металлами и соединениями серы верхние слои почвы.
