В 1736 на реке Миасс была построена новая крепость. Её заложили возле башкирского поселения Селяба (Челяба). В начале крепость и все прилегающие к ней земли входили в Сибирскую губернию. С 1743 года Челябинская крепость стала административным центром Исетской провинции. Первые переселенцы получали в Челябинске земельные наделы и различные льготы от правительства.
