Чтобы определить законы, по которым работают работает человеческая чувствительность. Психологам нужно было определить минимальный порог чувствительности. Для этого они провели следующий эксперимент.
Посадив человека в тёмную комнату, они поставили напротив него точный аппарат, продуцирующий луч света малой интесивности. Интенсивность света постепенно наращивалась и испытуемый должен был сказать, когда он начинает его видеть. Во второй части эксперимента всё происходило наоборот, испытуемуму нужно было сказать, когда он перестаёт видить свет при его постепенном угасании. Порог чувствительности определялся как значение на котором испытуемые больше половины раз начинает видеть свет. Но этот эксперимент оказался неточным. Поскольку ответы испытуемых зависили не только от их чувствительности, но и от поставленных вопрос эксперимента.
