Коллекция портретной живописи морского музея уступает лишь Национальной портретной галерее. Здесь хранятся портреты великих мореплавателей и первооткрывателей прошлого, а также великих людей Англии, полководцев и адмиралов. Среди них портреты вице-адмирала Нельсона и мореплавателя и исследователя Джеймса Кука. Адмиралу Нельсону, как национальному герою Англии посвящена целая галерея. Здесь и его биография, и описание сражений, и мундир, в котором он принял последний бой. Мундир пробит осколком на плече, и это ранение во время Трафальгардского сражения в 1805 г. стало для него смертельным. Здесь же выставлено его личное оружие и представлены воспоминания его современников и соратников. Из них можно даже узнать, что великий адмирал страдал… морской болезнью.
