Было — не было так, но рассказывают, что в далекие времена по Черному морю плыли греки из Константинополя, чтобы найти для себя новые плодородные земли. Плыли долго и как будто уже должны были увидеть берег. Море бушевало, бросая суда по волнам. Выбились люди из сил, борясь со стихией, и ждали гибели в темно-свинцовых водах.

Наконец стихла буря. Спустился густой туман, закрыл горизонт и небо. Куда плыть? В какую часть света несет корабли?

Долго блуждали по морю люди. Не стало на судах пресной воды, съедена вся пища, и снова мореплаватели ждали гибели от жажды и голода.

Много дней стоял кругом мертвый туман. Отчаяние охватило путешественников, потерявших надежду когда-нибудь встретиться с землей. Но однажды утром с зарей появился ветерок, белая пелена стала рассеиваться, выглянуло солнце, и совсем недалеко греки увидели зеленый берег и горы.

— Ялос! Ялос! Берег! Берег! — закричал дозорный, и все на корабле радостно приветствовали землю:

— Ялос! Ялос!

То была прекрасная Таврида…

С возродившимися силами работали гребцы и вскоре причалили к берегу. Вернулись жизнь и радость к уставшим переселенцам.

На благодатной земле греки, по соседству с местными жителями, основали поселение и назвали его самым дорогим для себя словом “Ялос” — берег.

Так возникла Ялта — прибрежное селение и ее название.
