) В «Старик и море» мы действительно находим не символы, а реалистический рассказ о жизни одного человека.
Но то, как живет этот человек, как он мыслит и чувствует, как он действует, заставляет задуматься о принципах человеческого существования, об отношении к жизни. Малочисленность действующих лиц переднего плана, скудость вещного оформления не приводит к разрушению общественных и прочих связей, не создает впечатления единственности. Просто эти связи находят в повести особенную форму выявления и отражения, придают содержанию характер общности. Нельзя требовать от небольшого философского произведения демон--' страции социальных связей, общественной структуры, которая исключается самой его формой. Вот почему нам представляется неправомерным механическое сопоставление «Старика» с большими романами Хемингуэя, а позиция критиков, сожалеющих об узости повести,— весьма уязвимой. Хемингуэй за свою долгую творческую жизнь написал о многом. Конечно, не все его темы и не все, даже важнейшие, проблемы века получили в «Старике» отражение. Но некоторые существенные аспекты человеческого бытия были в этой маленькой повести философски обобщены и освещены с позиций торжествующего гуманизма.
Мысли старика часто сливаются с мыслями автора. Смысл происходящего заключается в утверждении концепции: жизнь — это борьба. Только в такой беспрерывной борьбе требующей крайнего напряжения физических и нравственных сил, человек полностью ощущает себя человеком, обретает счастье. Самоутверждение человека само по себе оптимистично.
