Сюжет рассказа разворачивается с прибытия вновь назначенного викария (vicar) – главы церкви. В отличие от своих отсталых предшественников новый викарий придает большое значение образованию и, когда обнаруживает, что служитель Форман – неграмотный, он увольняет его, несмотря на его авторитет и безупречную службу, - просто из “высоких” принципов.
