По евангельскому рассказу, при гробе Иисуса Христа произошло землетрясение: ангел, сошедший с неба, отвалил камень от гроба и сидел на нем. Вид его был, как молния, и одежда его была бела, как снег. Мария Магдалина и другие благочестивые жены пошли к гробу. Подходя ко гробу, они увидели, что камень отвален. В пещере они увидели двух юношей в белых блистающих одеждах, и узнали от них, что Христос воскрес и встретит всех своих учеников в Галилее. Вышедши из пещеры, они побежали поспешно и рассказали все это ученикам. Те не поверили рассказанному.Только Петр и Иоанн встали и поспешили ко гробу. Между тем Мария Магдалина опять возвратилась в сад Иосифов и при гробе скорбела, не зная, где положили тело Господа. Теперь ей явился воскресший Христос и беседовал с нею. Об этом радостном событии Мария Магдалина известила все еще скорбящих учеников. Но они все еще не верили.
