Комедия - старейший, по сути, жанр художественного (игрового) кино, и по сей день этот жанр остаётся одним из наиболее популярных. Комедия призвана рассмешить зрителей, создать им хорошее настроение, и сделать это можно разными способами. Ещё в эпоху немого кино комедия была крайне популярным жанром.

Тем не менее, несмотря на гибкость и практическую неисчерпаемость тем и сюжетов, хорошую комедию снять не так-то просто. Жанр комедии требует изобретательности и мастерства и сценариста, и режиссёра, и тех актёров, которые будут играть главные роли. У одних это получается лучше, и они становятся знаменитыми, как Чаплин, Никулин или Гайдай, другие же пытаются смешить зрителей заезженными и примитивными шуточками, и это выходит у них искусственно и через силу. Снять хорошую комедию сложнее чем, скажем, снять хорошую драму или, тем более, боевик, и общее впечатление от картины легко можно испортить, допустив какую-нибудь пару ляпов.
