Проект появился на свет в 2005 году. Его основатели – трое бывших работников PayPal. При создании сервиса YouTube была использована технология Flash Video (flv).

С ее помощью удалось добиться сравнительно хорошего качества изображения при небольшом размере видеоматериалов. Проект сразу же зарекомендовал себя, как отличное средство развлечения, и вокруг него быстро сформировалось свое сообщество.

В ноябре 2006 года проект был выкуплен компанией Google за 1.65 миллиарда долларов. Многие помнят, что до того, как «Гугл» выкупил YouTube, он располагал собственным видеосервисом – «Google Video», который работает и сегодня, и закрывать его компания не собирается.

Первый видеоматериал появился на YouTube в 2005 году, 25 апреля. 14 ноября 2007 года сервис запускает русскоязычную версию портала. Первым видеоматериалом на русскоязычной версии стал видеоклип Петра Налича.

Сервис работает следующим образом: На официальном сайте YouTube.com любой пользователь может загрузить видеоматериалы в формате avi или mpeg. Сервис автоматически конвертирует видео в формат Flash video, используя для этого кодек Н.263, и после этого видеоматериал становится доступным для просмотра онлайн.

За пределами сервиса любое видео снабжено специальной HTML-разметкой для того, чтобы можно было вставлять видео на другие ресурсы. YouTube пользуется большой популярностью среди блоггеров и пользователей социальных сетей, а также среди многих медиа-ресурсов.
