С 1999 года под научным руководством Кружилина И.П. Всероссийским НИИ орошаемого земледелия проводятся исследования по изучению водного режима рисового поля при периодических поливах. Обосновываются сроки и нормы полива для поддержания различного водного режима почвы. Чтобы поддерживать на посевах риса влажность активного (0,6 м) слоя почвы не ниже 70% НВ в среднесухой год в Волго-Донском междуречье требуется проведение 11 поливов, в средневлажный 10 и во влажный 8 поливной нормой по 350 м3/га. Поддержание дифференцированного водного режима почвы (70-80-70% НВ) в среднесухой год обеспечивается проведением 1 полива нормой 350 м3/га и 17 поливов нормой 250 м3/га, в средневлажный 17 поливов нормой 250 м3/га и во влажный год 1 полива нормой 350 м3/га и 13 поливной нормой 250 м3/га. Поддержание влажности почвы не ниже 80% НВ сопровождается увеличением числа поливов нормой по 250 м3/га каждый во влажный год до 2, в средневлажный до 1 и в средне сухой до 2
