PHYSICS AND THE FUTURE OF TECHNOLOGY Physics and physicists play a vital role in understanding our way of life, influencing both its quality and contributing in a large way to wealth creation. With innovations as powerful and diverse as the World Wide Web and medical resonance imaging emerged from physics and grown, in little over a decade, seemingly from nowhere to become the everyday technologies, it is indeed a challenge to speculate where physics could lead us in the future. Trying to predict the future of technological development one should mention that impact the development of physics covers diverse spheres-from healthcare to defense and from crime prevention to manufacturing. Specialists point to advances in medicine that will spring from the date in data processing, imaging and miniaturization. They believe that healthcare will benefit enormously from advances in image resolution and the ability to see real-time three-dimensional images. And a huge growth in information and communication technologies will increasingly allow people to consult a "cyberphysician" through a TV screen. Physicists have always been at the forefront of sensor development and nanotechnology holds the potential of in vivo robotic systems, tools for endoscopic surgery and intelligent implants. A strong physics community with long-term research plans is needed for the development of renewable energies, such as wind and wave power, photovoltaic solar power, tidal power and hydrogen fuel cells. The work being carried out in physics laboratories also has the potential to improve energy efficiency, such as research on optoelectronic devices for use in high efficiency lighting.
