11 марта 2011 г. на востоке от острова Хонсю, в 130 км к востоку от города Сендай, произошло землетрясение магнитудой от 9,0 до 9,1 балла по шкале Рихтера.

Оно стало одним из сильнейших землетрясений за всю известную историю Японии. Спустя 10-30 минут цунами достигло побережья Японии, а спустя 69 минут волны достигли аэропорта Сендай. В результате цунами погибло около 16 тысяч человек, около 6 тысяч было ранено и 2 тысячи пропало без вести.

Значительная часть острова лишилась электричества, поскольку землетрясение стало причиной остановки 11 энергоблоков на атомной электростанции "Фукусима".

Ущерб от землетрясения и последовавшего за ним цунами оценивается в 14,5-36,6 миллиардов долларов
