В 1853 г. капитан-лейтенант В.А. Римский-Корсаков поступил в распоряжение адмирала Е. Путятина, отправлявшегося на фрегате “Паллада” и шхуне “Восток” к берегам Японии.
Шестого января “Паллада” под командованием Е. Путятина и “Восток” под командованием В.А. Римского-Корсакова вышли из Портсмута. В июне оба судна подошли к японским берегам. Спустя некоторое время опубликовал серию очерков: “Сахалин”, “Первое знакомство с Амуром”, “Поход на Камчатку” и др., в которых проявил себя как географ-исследователь. В дальнейшем, занимая командирские должности, В.А. Римский-Корсаков служил на Балтике. Занимался преподавательской деятельностью. В 1865 г. был произведен в контр-адмиралы и возглавил Морской корпус.
В 1871 году, вследствие ухудшившегося здоровья, Римский-Корсаков получил отпуск за границу и 4 ноября умер в городе Пиза, в Италии. Похоронен в Петербурге, на Смоленском кладбище.
