Следует подчеркнуть, что в этом определении надежность объекта тесно связано с понятием функции (или функций), для выполнения которой (которых) он предназначен. Поэтому важной задачей является определение и формулирование выполняемых функций и их взаимосвязь со свойствами, которыми должен обладать объект для их реализации. Существующие методы функционального анализа не позволяют установить такую взаимосвязь.
