Станок с числовым программным управлением (ЧПУ) является автоматизацией станков, которые управляются точно запрограммированных команд закодированных на носителе, в противоположность управлять в ручную с помощью ручных колёс или рычагов или механически автоматизированного кулачками в одиночку.
В современных системах ЧПУ от начало до конца с высокой степенью автоматизации при помощи системы автоматизированного проектирования (САПР) и программ автоматизированного производства (САМ).
ЧПУ-подобные системы в настоящее время используются для любого процесса, который может быть описан. К ним относятся лазерная резка, сварка, сварка, трением, гибка и т.д.
