После завоевания Казани Иваном Грозным все татары были выселены за пределы города. В Казани разрешено было остаться совсем немногим. В основном это были купцы, полезные государству. Жить татарам в пределах Казани было разрешено только на территории Старо-татарской слободы. На территории Кремля татарам было запрещено появляться под страхом смерти. Как исторический памятник Старо-татарская слобода была практически утеряна и забыта, но в последние годы велась активная реставрационная работа.
