Старый Бар расположен в 4 км от берега моря на возвышении порядка 100 м над общим уровнем города у подножия горы Румия. Первые упоминания о наличии в этих местах поселения относятся еще к IX веку. Город был основан римлянами под именем Антибар, так как был расположен напротив итальянского города Бари по другую сторону Адриатического моря.
