Всё время на проведение гонок от старта до финиша «Оксфорд–Кембридж» занимает не более двадцати минут. За это время гребцы (по девять человек в команде) успевают преодолеть расстояние более четырех миль (это почти семь километров) вверх по течению. Зрелищность достигается за счет слаженности движений гребцов и, что гораздо важнее, безудержного азарта болельщиков, которые заполняют все близлежащие мосты и набережные вдоль не слишком длинного маршрута. Традиционно у команды Кембриджа голубая форма, у Оксфорда — темно-синяя. В наши дни составы соревнующихся смешанные: гребцы — крепкие парни, рулевыми иногда выступают девушки, но обещают, что уже с 2015 года в регате будут участвовать и чисто женские команды.
